Port Honduras Marine Reserve

Established in 2000, the Reserve lies just north of Punta Gorda Town. It is an area recognised for its high biodiversity and serves as habitat for various endangered species, including the West Indian Manatee, the American saltwater crocodile, and the Morelet's crocodile. There are 135 small mangrove islands in the area, including the Snake Cayes, which are located on a fringe coral reef system and are home to abundant species of fish and coral.

Spend a day in the warm waters of the Reserve. You visit Frenchman Lagoon to look for manatees - the shy 'sea cow' and Frenchman Caye, a former Mayan trading port. It's then on to East Snake Caye for swimming and snorkelling, followed by lunch at the idyllic West Snake Caye - the stuff picture postcards are made of.

On your return journey you stop at the Ranger Station on tiny Abalone Caye to learn about their invaluable work in protecting the area and providing environmental education, and to get a bird's eye view of the Reserve from their observation tower. Fish on your journey back to PG, and have your catch cooked for supper!

Guide price approximately US$225 boat charter, plus US$5 per person marine reserve entrance fee, and US$7.50 per person lunch.

Sapodilla Cayes

A World Heritage Site and protected marine reserve, the Sapodilla Cayes are considered, by many, to be the most beautiful set of cayes in Belize, and offer some of the best snorkelling to be found. Your tour takes you to the southernmost part of the Belize Barrier Reef, where you'll visit Seal Caye, snorkel and lunch at Hunting Caye, with the beautiful Halfmoon Beach and turtle nesting site, before caye-hopping and fishing on your return journey to Punta Gorda.

Guide price approximately US$300 per boat charter. Marine reserve fees and lunch per person are extra.

Fly fishing

With its mangrove coast, clear rivers, hundreds of protective cayes, and the fringe reefs, the Port Honduras Marine Reserve forms one of the most important fish nurseries in the Caribbean. Sustainable fishing is promoted and the Reserve has made the use of gill nets illegal, after consultation with local fishermen. Manatee and dolphin sightings are common in this area.

The Reserve is one of the richest grounds for permit, tarpon, bonefish and snook, and is fast becoming recognised in worldwide angling circles as the 'Permit Capital of the World'. A catch of permit, tarpon and bonefish in a single day of fishing will earn you the much sought after and revered 'Grand Slam'!

Ask about fly fishing trips in Toledo - prices vary according to requirements, but tend to range between US$275 and US$325 for a full day's fishing for two fishermen.
